A Henry Thoreau Quote Worth Sharing

images-6The end of May, 2013, we moved from our Chapel Hill/Durham, NC life. People asked why we were making this move? There were practical answers…sizing down, a one floor plan, moving near family, financial considerations. Yesterday, the Thoreau quote surfaced from a box I unpacked. I have hauled this piece of paper around for thirty years or more. The quote appears at the bottom of a sepia photo of a path leading through a stand of trees. I could never have written these profound words, but I know them to be true, nonetheless. Thoreau gives us language we could never speak for ourselves about the divine direction (path) we pray we are on.

“I left the woods for as good a reason as I went there. Perhaps it seemed to me that I had several more lives to live, and could not spare any more time for that one. It is remarkable how easily and insensibly we fall into a particular route, and make a beaten track for ourselves.”

-Henry David Thoreau
