Valentines Day
I remember the Valentine boxes at Dewey School where every year there was a fancy box for everyone to stuff their Valentines in. The process took an inordinate amount of time, which began with a trip to the Kresge 5 and Dime on the corner of Church and Sherman, across from Marshall Fields Department Store.
Buying the perfect package of valentines was important, but it took even longer to decide which card was appropriate for each person in the class. The messages on the cards were as simple as You’re sweet as a cupcake, but was that the right message for Nancy or Charlie?
Like training wheels on a bicycle, choosing the right message was good practice. We learned how important it is to choose words carefully when talking to those we love. On Valentine’s Day it always begins with the big question….Will You Be My Valentine?
